Imrie Award

This award was established in 1983 by the department in honor of Dr. Imrie, a lifelong supporter of medical education and our department.

This cash prize and certificate are awarded to a senior medical student from UMMC's School of Medicine for outstanding performance in the department. The recipient will also have his or her name engraved on a perpetual wall plaque displayed in the orthopedic classroom area of the Medical Tower building.

Ronald J. Kendig Professor of the Year

This yearly award was established in 1999 by the department. The recipient is selected by the orthopaedic residents in order that they may acknowledge the many hours and hard work their attending faculty put toward their resident education. The award consists of a plaque. The recipient also has his or her name engraved on a perpetual wall plaque displayed in the orthopaedic classroom area of the Medical Tower building.

In May 2005, this award was renamed in memory of Dr. Ronald J. Kendig. Dr. Kendig devoted his life to the care of his pediatric patients and in teaching this specialty to the many orthopaedic residents who trained in our department.

Private Practice Professor of the Year

This yearly award was established in 2020 by the department. The recipient is selected by the orthopaedic residents in order that they may acknowledge the many hours and hard work the in-town teaching faculty put toward resident education. An acrylic award is presented to the faculty member and will be added to a perpetual plaque.

Resident Citizenship Award

This yearly award was established in 2003 by the department. The recipient is the resident that demonstrates a strong effort to keep his or her hospital records, required department documents and patient's records in a professional manner. He or she must also show genuine concern for his patients and their welfare. The award includes a plaque and cash prize.

The recipient will also have his or her name engraved on a perpetual wall plaque displayed in the orthopaedic classroom area of the Medical Tower building.

Freeland Research Award

The Freeland Research Award is presented at the yearly Resident Research Day in recognition of the best resident project/paper.

Anatomy Award

This award was stablished in 2020 by Dr. John Morellato and presented to the resident with the highest marks on the Orthopaedic Surgery Anatomy Exam. The award consists of a plaque, book, and name added to the perpetual Anatomy Cup.

Caldwell Award

The Robert S. Caldwell, MD Award is awarded yearly to an UMMC resident or fellow and is sponsored by the Medical Assurance Company of Mississippi. The criteria are as follows: “A member of the UMMC House Staff who is judged to have exhibited exemplary performance in quality of patient care, doctor/patient relationships, and record keeping.” The award consists of a $1,000 cash award and will be recognized at a small dinner with the MACM Board and Executive Staff and at the Spring Medical Staff Meeting.
